Notes From The Reading Room

The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.

A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

Koh Santepheap means “Island of Peace” in Khmer. Danh Hong made it for reading: Khmer body text in interfaces, on the web and in print, and in particular for documents that run English and Khmer side by side, where the Khmer has to sit comfortably next to a Latin serif.

He went as far as drawing the Regular and Bold to harmonize with Noto Serif, which gives a ready partner for the English. Khmer is an abugida, and its consonant clusters stack, the second consonant written small below the first, so a body face for it carries a lot of subscript forms and needs room above and below the line.

Danh Hong has drawn fonts for Khmer and its Southeast Asian neighbors for many years and is active in KhmerOS, the project that helps Cambodians use computers in their own language. He has more than 20 Khmer families on Google.

5 weights ship here, Thin, Light, Regular, Bold and Black. The file also holds the Khmer numerals and the Khmer symbols for lunar dates, while the Latin is limited to the basic alphabet.
