Notes From The Reading Room
The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.
A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

Spoken Sinhala gets by on 40 letters, 20 vowels and 20 consonants, known as the “pure” set. Correct spelling asks for more. 18 extra consonants make up the “mixed” set, kept for spellings that remember an older pronunciation and for words borrowed from other languages, and this serif draws all of them.
The script is an Indic abugida, written left to right, in use in Sri Lanka since around 300 CE. About 15 million people speak Sinhala, and the same letters also write Pali and Sanskrit. It needs software with complex text shaping.
Noto Serif Sinhala is the modulated version, with thick and thin strokes. It comes in 9 weights here, Thin to Black, made by Monotype for Google’s Noto collection, and it has discretionary ligatures among its features.
For a book or a newspaper set in Sinhala we would choose this over the sans. The contrast suits long reading.
