Bangla is written by some 265 million people, in Bangladesh and India, and carries Bengali along with Assamese, Sylheti, Santali, Maithili, Sanskrit and several more. The script took shape in the 11th century, and it needs proper shaping software to put its conjuncts and vowel signs together.
This is the serif member of Google’s Noto collection for Bangla, with modulated strokes, thick against thin, which gives a page of literary prose a more bookish color. The credits name Juan Bruce, Universal Thirst, Indian Type Foundry and the Monotype design team.
It comes in 9 weights, Thin to Black, and runs a little wide. For a novel we would try Regular and Light; the Black is for a cover or a masthead.
