Harbor strike enters week 3
Newspaper headlines were the starting point, the big serif words above the fold, and Duarte Pinto set out to redo them with a more contemporary hand. What he cared about most was the meeting of thick and thin: Gloock’s strokes swell from hairline to heavy and back without any visible joint, and that smooth handover is the whole character of the face.
Pinto was a young Portuguese graphic designer when he made it, studying communication design in Germany on an exchange. Version 1.0 is dated August 2022 and it arrived on Google in January 2023. It is still his only family there.
Contrast this high asks for size. Below headline scale the hairlines start to fade and the letters lose their snap, so we would not set a paragraph in it. Big, on a magazine cover or a poster, it holds the page. The file does carry tabular figures, a slashed zero and a long row of currency signs, if you need numbers in a big headline.
