Ben Weiner went looking at the lettering on 19th century maps and gravestones, and also, less obviously, on the maker’s plates bolted to cast-iron machinery. Bentham is what he found those letters had in common: bulging, swelling curves and little bobbles on the terminals, with an awkwardness that is mannered on purpose.
In metal type the same family of shapes is called the modern face. It filled books all through the 1800s and hung on in school textbooks long after, and computer science still has it because Donald Knuth chose that style for TeX.
Weiner calls his version a half-way design, faithful to none of its sources and colored by his own way of drawing.
The lowercase is small against the capitals, which suits titles and headings more than long reading at text size. There is 1 Regular and very little else, standard ligatures and the Latin accents.
