Frederic Goudy’s Deepdene is the source, and Barry Schwartz brought it back in 2010 under a new name, Linden Hill, with both the roman and the italic. It sits among his Sorts Mill fonts, and The League of Moveable Type carries it too.
What a reader notices first is how small the lowercase sits under the capitals. The page gets an old book look from that, and it wants a size or 2 more than a modern text face before it reads comfortably. The italic is a narrow one and comes out some 15% tighter across a line than the roman, which saves room in a long title.
Inside the files you get:
- real small caps, plus a feature that turns capitals into them
- standard ligatures
- stylistic alternates
- fractions, with superscript and subscript figures
Our pick would be a slim volume of poems, set in the roman with the italic for titles and small caps on the running heads.
