Somebody lettered the poster for a Korean Hamlet film in the 1940s, and who it was is not known. Minjoo Ham found the lettering, with its sharp and quirky details, and decided to revive it, which is not the usual source for a revival.
Ham drew the Hangeul first. Then Mark Frömberg took on the job of carrying those traits into a Latin alphabet. Hypertype, their studio, recommends it above all for Hangeul and Latin set together, and that is where the 2 halves pay off: a Korean line and an English one share the same sharpness.
The range is wide. 9 weights from Thin to Black, 3,607 characters, Vietnamese in the Latin, and a proper text kit:
- small caps and a caps-to-small-caps switch, old style and lining figures in tabular or proportional widths
Our pick would be the middle weights for reading and the Black for a poster headline, where the quirks get large enough to enjoy. The Latin sets wide, so allow for longer lines than a typical book serif. It has been on Google Fonts since May 2021.
