Notes From The Reading Room

The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.

A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

The Sanskrit version of Tiro Devanagari keeps conjuncts in their traditional forms, the stacked and joined consonant clusters an old printed page would show, and that choice tells you who it is for.

It started with a commission. In 2012 Harvard University Press asked Fiona Ross and John Hudson, working through Tiro Typeworks, for typefaces for the Murty Classical Library of India, a series reprinting ancient Indian texts, Vedic and early Sanskrit works among them. The letters had to carry the look those texts once had in print and still read clearly in modern print and on screens. So the designers studied manuscripts and early Indian printing, and they took their model from the 19th and 20th century metal types of the Nirnaya Sagar Press, redrawn wider and more open in the counters, the diagonal strokes and terminals kept strong.

In 2019 Google Fonts came to Tiro for an extended open version. The 2 designers did that round over video calls and email, 8 hours apart and kept from travel by the pandemic. What came out of it for this family:

  • signs for Vedic texts added to the character set
  • a new italic, adapted by Paul Hanslow
  • a Latin with the diacritics used to transcribe Indian languages, with small caps and 2 stylistic sets

The Devanagari is by Ross and Hudson, the Latin by Hudson. For a bilingual edition, Sanskrit on the left page and a romanized or English text on the right, it is hard to think of a better-prepared free option, and the italic gives the English side something to work with for titles and terms.
