W. A. Dwiggins, the American typographer, had an idea he called the M-Formula, and Ania Kruk went exploring it when she drew Kotta One in 2012. The result is an odd and appealing thing, a text face with the construction of a calligraphic italic hand and the legibility of a roman, angular and geometric, with sharp lines and strong horizontal strokes that set up a steady rhythm on the page.
Kruk meant it to work alone, as Renaissance typefaces did, so there is no upright roman partner waiting in the wings.
Would I set a novel in it? Yes, if the novel had some edge to it. Kruk built it for long texts and the horizontals carry the eye along. 1 style and kerning are all you get.
