Notes From The Reading Room

The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.

A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

A preface to the second edition

Barry Schwartz noticed, while redrawing Frederic Goudy’s Kennerley Oldstyle, that the letters fit together tightly and evenly and lean very little on kerning. He liked that enough to quote the old Monotype specimen books on it, which praised how the characters seem to lock into one another the way early types did. The font does ship with kerning for the pairs that want it, so leave it switched on in your layout program.

That close fit is the reason to use it. A page in Goudy Bookletter 1911 looks dense and even in an old fashioned, bookish way, the capitals tall over a small lowercase, and some letters spread out to claim their space. Schwartz pointed to the bowed v and w as examples.

It is a single Regular with no italic or bold, so it suits a short book of poems or a pamphlet more than a full novel that needs emphasis.
