Notes From The Reading Room
The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.
A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

The headstroke is the line that ties a Gurmukhi word together along the top, and in this serif version of Noto the strokes are modulated, thick against thin, under and along it. Vaibhav Singh designed it with the Monotype team for Google’s Noto collection.
Gurmukhi, in its current form, goes back to Guru Angad in the 16th century. It is used in India for Punjabi, mainly by Sikhs, and about 22 million people read it. Like other Indic scripts it depends on shaping software to build its vowel signs around the consonants.
9 weights, from Thin to Black. We’d think of books and official letters for it, and leave screens to the Noto Sans.
