Notes From The Reading Room
The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.
A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

British posters of the 20th century had a habit that Nicole Fally picked up for Stoke, letterforms that are perfectly serious in their structure and then a little odd in their proportions and their details, and the whole face is built on that mismatch. It is a semi-wide serif with high contrast, published through Sorkin Type, and the lowercase is short. Its x-height reaches only 65% of the capital height, and the font’s own description names that low x-height as the reason it belongs at medium and large sizes.
We agree. At 12 px the small letters crowd under the caps; at 40 px the width and the contrast start to make sense, and a 2 line headline in it has a dry, slightly old-fashioned humor.
A revision came in July 2012. The Regular got slightly darker so ttfautohint could hint it properly for Windows, and the glyph sizes and spacing were changed and the bends in the serifs cut back, since they rendered badly in Windows XP. The character set grew too; it now covers Latin-1 and Latin-2 for Eastern Europe, plus Turkish and the old Macintosh set.
