These are the small capitals of the Great Primer, a size Oxford acquired in 1684, and like the roman they go back to punches cut by Peter De Walpergen, John Fell’s own type-founder.
Fell, Bishop of Oxford and Dean of Christ Church, handed De Walpergen the large bodies, Great Primer among them, and when Fell died in 1686 the punches, matrices and molds went to the University by his will, to be kept together. They were.
Igino Marini digitized the Fell Types from that material. Here there are 340 characters, meant to be printed at 17 points to match the metal, and Marini spaced and kerned it with his own iKern software.
The contrast between thick and thin strokes is heavier than in the Dutch types it resembles, and Stanley Morison found the large Fell faces hard to approve of wholly. That roughness is the attraction. Use it for a title page or a running head where the uneven cut reads as age. Not much use below display sizes.
