Autumn tea in the garden
In Japanese the name is written 佑字【肅】, and the bracketed character is the one read syuku. Kinuta Font Factory gave it to the most dignified of the 3 kana designs in its Yuji project, which digitizes the brush lettering of the calligrapher Yuji Kataoka. Its makers describe it as having tradition and dignity while staying approachable, a design the general public can take to.
The 3 designs, Syuku, Mai and Boku, share the same kanji and some of the symbols. What changes between them is the kana and the Latin. 2 more fonts in the project, Akari and Akebono, set hentaigana, the older kana forms that were left out when hiragana was standardized in 1900.
The technical side is solid. The character set follows Adobe-Japan1-3 with a few CIDs left out, uses JIS2004 glyph shapes by default and adds Google’s Latin Core set, with Greek and Cyrillic, 8,013 characters in a single Regular style.
Kinuta Font Factory has been making fonts since 1995 and likes to call them clothes made for words. Syuku is the formal suit of the 3. We would use it for headings, a menu or a book jacket, where the brush strokes have room.
