Instrument Serif began as a brand font. Rodrigo Fuenzalida and Jordan Egstad drew it for Instrument, and the brief was a condensed display face that would update some of the long-tested habits of old-style serifs for large sizes. It went public on Google Fonts in 2023.
Condensed it is. A line of it takes about 23% less room than the same words in Georgia, so a big headline fits where a normal serif would wrap. The Italic, oddly, runs a little wider than the roman, which suits pull quotes that want to spread out.
There are 2 styles and 333 characters, with discretionary ligatures and 1 stylistic set. No bold, which tells you how to use it: set big, with a sans doing the small text.
