Quarterly letter to shareholders

Open an old Word document on a computer that lacks Baskerville Old Face and the text reflows: lines break in new places, pages shift, a 1-page letter spills onto 2. Bacasime Antique exists to stop that. It is a fallback font whose metrics match Baskerville Old Face, so a document set in the missing font keeps its layout.

It comes from the DocRepair Project, first funded by Google Fonts, which makes open stand-ins for common proprietary fonts in Office Open XML files and so helps them comply with the ISO/IEC 29500 standard. There are 7 of these families. Caprasimo, for example, covers Cooper Black and Belanosima covers Berlin Sans FB.

The shapes come from Claus Eggers Sørensen’s Playfair, a transitional design. Playfair has axes for optical size, width and weight; Bacasime Antique fixes 1 static style that fits the old metrics. It is Latin only, with no OpenType extras.
