Malayalam has been written since around 830 CE, and today some 38 million people use the script. It grew out of the Vatteluttu alphabet, has 15 vowel letters and 42 consonants plus a few other signs, and serves Malayalam, the official language of Kerala, as well as Irula, Paniya and some other languages.
This Noto serif gives it modulated strokes, thick against thin, which suits long reading in a book or a newspaper. The Monotype design team drew it. It needs shaping support in the software to set properly.
9 weights from Thin to Black. We would set body text in Regular and give the Black to a newspaper masthead.
