Notes From The Reading Room

The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.

A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

Silkscreen printing works on a grid, and Enriqueta was drawn to meet its technical demands. Viviana Monsalve and Gustavo Ibarra, working as FontFuror, figured that a face built for a grid would also suit screens, which are made of pixels anyway. What they arrived at is a hybrid slab serif: the sturdiness and strong serifs of the Egyptian style, with the proportions and soft humanist feel of a Roman text face.

It was shown at Tipos Latinos 2010, the fourth Latin American typography biennial, and picked for the German editorial project Typodarium 2012.

In July 2019 the family gained a Medium and a Semi Bold, so there are 4 steps now, Regular through Bold. That is enough for text, subheads and some emphasis without switching face. We would put it on something that has to read cleanly both on a cheap monitor and on a printed poster, a school newsletter or a community website. Case sensitive forms and fractions are included.
