Notes From The Reading Room

Say it EE-dee-klat, with the stress up front. The name is ancient Akkadian, or Assyrian, for the Tigris River, a fitting choice for a font serving the communities that use East Syriac: the Assyrians of the Church of the East and the Chaldeans. The Syrian Orthodox use the same style too, mostly for headings.
SIL started from the same source as its Ramsina, metal type cut in India around 1920, but moved further from it. Idiqlat is resized and modernized, where Ramsina stays close to a facsimile. For the look of the old printed page, take Ramsina; for a modern document, this one.
The font carries the glyph alternates, ligatures and diacritics East Syriac requires, with contextual alternates and 6 stylistic sets, and its Latin is borrowed from Crimson Pro.
It is a light family, Extra Light, Light and Regular and nothing heavier, so a bold heading has to come from another font. Google added it in January 2026.
