Notes From The Reading Room
The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.
A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

Of the Arabic styles, Kufi has the simplified structure and Nastaliq the highly cursive one kept mostly for Urdu. Naskh is the calligraphic hand in wide everyday use, and Noto Naskh Arabic draws it with thick and thin strokes so that it can share a page with serif Latin type.
How far it reaches
Arabic is a right to left abjad with something like 660 million users, the 2nd or 3rd most used script in the world, and it writes far more than Arabic. Persian, Urdu, Kurdish, Pashto, Sindhi, Uyghur and Kashmiri all use it, along with Somali, Mandinka and Rohingya in some communities, and every one of those brings extra letters. The font covers 1,122 characters across 6 Unicode blocks, Arabic Supplement, Extended-A and both presentation-form blocks included, so most of these languages can be set without switching fonts.
There are 4 weights, Regular, Medium, Semi Bold and Bold. Short vowels are optional marks in Arabic, and the font carries them, but they need software that shapes the text properly.
The work came from Monotype’s team with David Williams, Mohamad Dakak, Nizar Qandah and Khaled Hosny, for Google. A detail that tells you who it was built for: both tabular and proportional figures are in the OpenType features. Tables of numbers line up in columns when you ask for tabular ones, which matters on a report or an invoice more than in a novel.
Our view is that Regular and Medium will carry book pages and news articles, and Bold should be saved for headings, since Naskh in heavy weights fills in quickly where dots and small loops crowd together.
