Notes From The Reading Room
The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.
A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

Sumana is Sanskrit for flower, and Lora, the Cyreal serif by Olga Karpushina that supplied this family’s Latin, means the same thing in Spanish.
It was his first Devanagari, drawn in 2014 and 2015, and he admits it took many rounds to make the 2 scripts agree. His approach was to keep the Devanagari close to a traditional Indian calligraphic model and season it with graphic ideas taken from Lora’s Latin. The Latin, in turn, had its vertical and horizontal metrics adjusted so it sits better next to the Devanagari.
He did not do it alone. Fiona Ross, Eric McLaughlin, Vaishnavi Murthy, Pria Ravichandran and Wei Huang all advised, and the revision history is public in the Google Fonts forum.
Regular and Bold. Sumana is meant for text setting and the web, and that is where we would use it, in an article or a bilingual site where Devanagari and Latin run side by side.
