Tokyo Kissaten, since 1964
Copperplate Gothic is an American face, drawn by Frederic Goudy and issued by American Type Founders from 1901: capitals only, with serifs so small they do little more than sharpen the ends. Natsumi Matsuba wanted the same thing in Japanese, a typeface with steady stroke weight and tiny serifs, and Aoboshi is the result.
It covers hiragana and katakana, the Latin alphabet and full-width symbols, but no kanji, so it suits headings and signs where the kana and Latin carry the words. A Japanese text with kanji in it will need a second font for those characters.
Matsuba, born in 1991 and based in Chiba, studied at Tokyo Zokei University and works mainly in editorial design, with a soft spot for display type. Aoboshi One is Matsuba’s only family on Google so far. 1 Regular weight, with old style figures and a stylistic set on the Latin side.
