Notes From The Reading Room
The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.
A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

Some 21 million people use the Odia script, also called Oriya, an Indic abugida written left to right that has been in use since around the 14th century. It writes the Odia language and serves some Dravidian and Munda languages too.
Noto Serif Oriya is a modulated design for it, with thick and thin strokes in the manner of a serif text face, drawn by David Williams for Google’s Noto project. There are 4 weights, Regular, Medium, Semi Bold and Bold, which is enough to set a book chapter with proper headings.
Odia needs software support for complex text layout, called shaping, before it displays properly, so use it in an app that has it. Latin comes along for mixed text. It arrived on Google Fonts in 2022.
