Notes From The Reading Room

The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.

A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

In an email address set in capitals, the @ of Bluu Next changes shape to suit them, and parentheses around an all-caps word move up to center on the capitals. That case-sensitive feature is 1 of a surprising number of OpenType extras Jean-Baptiste Morizot packed into a serif that only comes in bold.

Velvetyne Type Foundry publishes it, and the project’s own description is short: a bold serif with a strong flavor. Strong, on the page, means wedge-sharp serifs and heavy strokes with plenty of contrast between thick and thin.

The italic goes its own way. Its lowercase turns calligraphic, and the letters are 11.4% narrower than the upright ones, so an italic phrase inside a headline tucks in tighter than you might expect.

What else is in the family:

  • old-style figures beside the default ones, and a slashed zero
  • fractions, with superior and inferior numbers
  • ligatures for ff and fl
  • an alternate r in stylistic set 1

Bold and Bold Italic, 308 characters, Western European Latin, with a 2014 date in the copyright. Use it big, from about 30 px up; at text sizes the sharp serifs fill in and the flavor turns to clutter.
