Notes From The Reading Room
The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.
A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

Some 45 million people use the Kannada script, and it writes more than the Kannada language. The same script, in southern India, also serves Konkani, Tulu and Badaga, along with Kudiya and Paniya. It is an Indic abugida that runs left to right with a headstroke on part of the letters, and it is related to Telugu.
Noto Serif Kannada is the modulated, serif design for that script in Google’s Noto collection. The font files credit 3 hands, Universal Thirst, Indian Type Foundry and the Monotype design team, a strong line-up. Kannada depends on complex text layout, so it will only render properly in software that does the shaping.
What makes it practical is the range. There are 9 weights, Thin at 100 through Black at 900, so a Kannada newspaper or textbook can run body text and headlines in 1 family. The Latin is a matching serif, and the coverage also reaches into the Vedic Extensions block.
We’d start body text at Regular and keep the thinnest weights for large display lines.
