Notes From The Reading Room
The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.
A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

Letters from the Greek diaspora
The Greek type Firmin Didot cut in Paris in 1805 went straight into the books of Adamantios Korais, the leading scholar of the Greek Enlightenment and a central figure of the diaspora. It reached Greece itself in 1821, during the Revolution, in a field press brought by Didot’s grandson Ambroise Firmin Didot, and for well over a century after that it was the type almost every Greek publication was set in. Only in the last decades of the 20th century did it give ground.
In 1994 the Greek Font Society made a new font from it. Takis Katsoulidis designed GFS Didot and George D. Matthiopoulos digitized it.
The Latin is the surprise. It was drawn after Hermann Zapf’s Palatino, and to our eye that gives English or French text next to the Greek a calmer, more pen-made tone than a French Didot partner would have. For a bilingual edition of a classical text, where Greek and Latin share a page, that pairing is the reason to pick it.
