Notes From The Reading Room

The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.

A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

Vollkorn SC is the small caps sister of Friedrich Althausen’s Vollkorn, which was his first attempt at type design. He put the main family’s Regular out in 2005, and it was downloaded thousands of times before the download counter gave out 2 years later. The name, German for wholemeal and spoken with an F, points at the everyday text type of the hand-setting age.

He looked to book faces from the Renaissance onward and then went his own way, with dark, meaty serifs and a bouncy, healthy look.

4 weights, Regular, Semi Bold, Bold and Black, with Cyrillic and Vietnamese, 7 stylistic sets and a slashed zero. Small caps set wide, so leave the line some room. We would use it for running heads, for acronyms inside a page of Vollkorn text, and for title pages.
