Notes From The Reading Room

The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.

A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

Cormorant’s debt to Claude Garamont is plain in every bracketed serif, yet Christian Thalmann traced no particular Garamond, and most of the glyphs were made from scratch.

Cormorant SC is 1 slice of a much bigger project. The whole Cormorant family runs to 45 font files in 9 visual styles, among them Garamond, Infant, Upright Cursive and Unicase, all of it drawn, spaced, kerned and produced by Thalmann alone at Catharsis Fonts in Zurich. Google Fonts paid for the development of the libre release and added the family in January 2017.

What the SC version does

Type lowercase and you get small capitals. Every letter on the line is a capital form, the true caps tall and the rest at small cap height, and that gives a heading or a name the formal, engraved look of a title page. There are 5 weights here, Light at 300 to Bold at 700, and the files carry Latin, Cyrillic and Vietnamese across 972 characters, with 4 stylistic sets and a slashed zero tucked in among the features.

Thalmann thought of Cormorant as a display family, and its hairlines want room. Keep it big: a book jacket, the masthead of a letter, a wedding card where the couple’s names go in small caps and the details in Cormorant Garamond underneath. At 12 px those hairlines thin away to nothing on a screen.
