The ink traps in Trench Slab are not hidden. Every Trench font has them, large and plain to see, and in this branch the slab serifs are blown up to the same scale, so the 2 oversized details answer each other.
Shiva Nallaperumal drew the Trench superfamily for Indian Type Foundry, which publishes it on Fontshare. Trench Sans in the same family was drawn for very small print sizes. Slab goes the other way. It is meant for sizes above normal reading text, from a short passage up to very large display settings, where those traps become part of the look.
By default you get a capital I with serifs, a double-story a and a single-story g. The 3 stylistic sets change that:
- ss01, “Display Inktraps”, ss02, a double-story “Alternate g”, and ss03, an “Alternate I” without serifs, plus alternate M, N, W and w
The wider family runs from Light to Bold; this page carries the Regular. We would set it at 36 px and up on a poster and turn on the display ink traps, the point being to see them.
