Early in the 20th century the Bulaq Press in Cairo, also known as the Amiria Press, pioneered an Arabic typeface, and Amiri is a revival of it, named after the press. Khaled Hosny led the project, with Sebastian Kosch also credited on Google’s page. The aim is plain: classical Naskh style Arabic for typesetting books and other running text.
The file goes deep, 1,699 characters with 8 stylistic sets and standard ligatures, and a Latin set to go with the Arabic.
There are 4 styles, Regular and Bold each with an italic. We set the same text in the italic and in the roman and the italic came out 9% narrower, so it fits more on a line and stands apart from the upright. Use it for emphasis or a quotation inside a passage.
For a long Arabic text I’d keep to Regular at a generous size and line spacing, and save the Bold for headings.
