Radley began as chisel work. Vernon Adams sketched and carved its letters straight into wood with traditional carving tools, for titling, then scanned the carvings, traced them in FontForge and cleaned them up before expanding the character set. His model was the practical lettering of hand carvers, people who cut letters quickly and economically.
He kept at it after the launch, adding the Italic and more Latin languages and refining glyphs as users sent in feedback. In 2017 Marc Foley finished what Adams had started.
Adams meant it for titles and text both. It sets close to Georgia’s width, so it can step into a layout built on Georgia without the lines moving much, and the Italic runs a little narrower than the Regular. There is no bold, which settles how headings work: size, or a second family on top.
