Oxford had this Great Primer, roman and italic, by 1684, 2 years before John Fell died. Fell, Bishop of Oxford, spent his last 18 years building a learned press there, and he gave the large sizes to his own type-founder.
That was Peter De Walpergen, a man with a stint founding type and printing in Java for the Dutch East India Company behind him. When Fell died the whole collection, punches, matrices and molds, passed to the University by his will, and it was kept together.
Igino Marini digitized it in 2007, keeping the irregular, slightly rough letters of the old type and spacing the result with iKern, a tool he wrote himself.
The italic is narrower than the roman and good for verse. 4 stylistic sets and the discretionary ligatures bring back some period forms, worth trying on a title page.
Marini’s note says to print it at 17 points to match the original size. On screen, keep it at 20 px or larger; the lowercase is short, and those rough edges need some size before they look intentional.
