Notes From The Reading Room
The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.
A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

Look at the end of a stroke in Kaisei and you find a small dot. The project’s name, 解星, has a star in it, and the dot is that star, set at the sweeps and hooks of the letters. Kazuo Kanai of Font-Kai started the Kaisei project in 2016, and its strokes follow the motion of a pen scratching across paper. The kanji horizontals are also heavier than in a typical Mincho, for reading on screens.
Kaisei is a set of 4 sibling families, Opti, Decol, HaruNoUmi and Tokumin. The kanji, the Latin and the symbols are common to all 4; only the kana change. In Decol the kana take on the dot too, so a line of text ends up dotted all over. Font-Kai says this makes it gentler on the eyes and gives it a cute, playful feel, and recommends it for short sentences and titles, paired with Kaisei Opti.
We agree. A shop name or a heading on a café menu suits it, and a full page of running text would get busy.
Each font holds about 7,000 kanji to the Adobe-Japan1-3 standard, plus Latin and Cyrillic, in Regular, Medium and Bold.
Before type, Kanai worked in graphic design, lettering and logos; a prize in the Morisawa Type Competition moved him to type design full time in 1984.
