Notes From The Reading Room
The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.
A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

Ubuntu, Debian and Fedora put DejaVu in their default installs, as do OpenBSD, Solaris, Haiku and AmigaOS 4, and BlackBerry phones carried it from OS 4.5 under the names BBAlphaSans and BBAlphaSerif. Plenty of people have read it without ever picking it.
Its root is Bitstream Vera, a free family with not much past Western European Latin in it. In 2004 Štěpán Roh set out to extend that character set while leaving Vera’s look alone, and over the years the project took in Olwen, Bepa, the SUSE standard fonts and part of the Arev fonts. The serif member now has 3,447 characters, with Greek, Cyrillic, Armenian, Georgian and Vietnamese next to the Latin, small caps for Latin and Greek, case-sensitive forms of ¿ and ¡, and a choice between single and double-story g.
Version 2.37 from 2016 is still the current release, and in it the team marked the serif Italic and Bold Italic as experimental.
So what is it good for now? Documents that mix alphabets, mostly. A manual with an Armenian or Georgian passage can stay in 1 family from cover to index, and we would take that over a prettier serif that runs out of letters halfway.
