Notes From The Reading Room
The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.
A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

Plex began as IBM’s house type, developed by its Brand and Experience team around a theme the company has come back to since the turn of the century, people and machines. Mike Abbink led the design with Paul van der Laan and Pieter van Rosmalen of the studio Bold Monday. The family grew to a Sans, a Sans Condensed, a Mono and this Serif.
The Serif is the one IBM points at storytelling and editorial work. It keeps some of the engineered feel of the Sans, so the 2 sit together on a page without much effort, and a report could run Plex Sans for the headings and charts and Plex Serif for the paragraphs.
The italics deserve their own paragraph. They are expressive for a corporate family, and much narrower than the roman, close to 11% across a line, which makes them good for setting off a phrase in running text.
14 styles in all, Thin through Bold, each with its italic, and Cyrillic and Vietnamese alongside Latin. A slashed zero and 5 stylistic sets sit in the features.
Thin is an odd weight for a serif in a long document. Keep it for big type.
