Notes From The Reading Room
The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.
A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

Notes beside the old manuscript
Balinese script has 47 letters and about 5 million users. It is an abugida from Southeast Asia, written left to right, descended from Old Kawi and close kin to Javanese. On Bali and Java it turns up mostly on signs and in traditional literature, with some new writing on a smaller scale, and it has also been used for Old Javanese and Sanskrit.
Noto Serif Balinese is the modulated, serif-style design for it in Google’s Noto collection, the project that aims to cover every modern and ancient language. It supports 129 characters from the Unicode Balinese block, and Google Fonts added it in November 2020.
Like other complex scripts, it depends on shaping support in whatever software sets it.
A Latin set comes with it for mixed text. 1 weight only, so a heading and its paragraph will look the same unless you change size.
