Notes From The Reading Room
The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.
A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

Cormorant grew into 9 visual styles, and this is the oddest of them, the Upright Cursive. The letters are built the way an italic is built, then stood up straight. On a wedding card or a book jacket you get the cursive feel with no slant at all.
Christian Thalmann, a type designer in Zurich who works as Catharsis Fonts, did everything himself, from drawing and spacing to kerning, programming and production, and Google Fonts paid for the development. Claude Garamont’s work inspired the project, though no single Garamond served as its base. The family arrived on Google Fonts in January 2017.
The OpenType kit is deep for a display face:
- 7 stylistic sets, stylistic and contextual alternates, discretionary ligatures
- old style and lining figures, each tabular or proportional, and a slashed zero
5 weights run from Light to Bold. The x-height is small and the letters narrow, which suits titles; we would keep the Light at 28 px or more and let the Medium or Semi Bold do anything smaller.
