Notes From The Reading Room

The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.

A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

Mozilla’s wordmark is set in Zilla Slab, and so are its headlines and most of its design work, since the face is the foundation’s core typeface. Typotheque built it from Tesla, an earlier slab of its own, with smooth curves and true italics, and Mozilla led the project.

Those italics are the part we would point at. Drawn as letters in their own right, they run 7% narrower than the roman, so a phrase switched to italic tightens visibly on the line.

For a brand face the OpenType set goes deep:

  • small caps, with caps-to-small-caps for acronyms
  • old style, lining, tabular and proportional figures
  • a slashed zero, handy for serial numbers and code snippets
  • fractions and superscripts

There are 10 styles, 5 weights from Light to Bold with an italic for each, and 513 characters of extended Latin. Typotheque talks about an industrial look that stays approachable. Where it has worked best, to our eye, is headlines and short web articles with a sans doing the interface around them.
