Notes From The Reading Room
The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.
A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

Zen Old Mincho began as a single Regular weight, a classic Japanese mincho meant for reading. People kept asking for heavier versions, so Yoshimichi Ohira added them, and the family now runs Regular, Medium, Semi Bold, Bold and Black.
That range changes what the font can do. A mincho at Regular is for the body of a novel; the same design at Black can sit on its cover.
It is part of Ohira’s Zen Fonts collection, the largest set of Japanese type on Google Fonts, which he opened to the public as Google worked to expand its Japanese library from 2019 onward. The character set is broad: kana and kanji, Latin, and also Greek and Cyrillic, 7,815 characters per weight.
The Latin has a small lowercase under tall capitals, which gives English words on a Japanese page a slightly old book look. For fiction we would stay at Regular.
