A Page In Habibi

Habibi · Regular

Headings, labels and running text.

Notes From The Reading Room

The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.

A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

The ferryman kept a diary

Small caps and old style figures are both in Habibi, which is more than most single-style serifs bother with, and they say what Magnus Gaarde had in mind: a text face for proper reading.

He drew it at Sorkin Type with high contrast between thick and thin, taking from 2 places at once. The older side comes from the text faces of the 15th and 16th centuries, the other side from crisp contemporary type, and the mix gives a page with some old-book warmth and clean, sharp edges. Gaarde meant it to work from small sizes up to display.

We would be careful at the small end on screens, where the thin strokes of a high contrast face can get lost, and happier with it in print or at 18 px and over. There is only the Regular, so no italic and no bold; plan the emphasis with the small caps instead. Discretionary ligatures and 1 stylistic set are tucked into the features as well.
