Christian Robertson’s Roboto with slabs on it. The skeleton stays mechanical and mostly geometric, the curves stay open, and each letter keeps the uneven, natural width it had in the sans, so a paragraph has the pace of a book serif more than the word slab would lead you to expect.
It was made to be used next to Roboto and Roboto Condensed, so a site can run Roboto for interface text and the slab for headings without the 2 looking like strangers.
9 weights, Thin to Black. The family went variable on weight in November 2019; the downloads here are the static styles. Each holds 901 characters for Latin, Greek, Cyrillic and Vietnamese, with small caps, lining figures, fractions and 5 stylistic sets.
Our pick would be Light or Regular for longer web text and Bold for headlines, where the slabs give a heading more grip than a sans would. Thin, at display size only.
