Notes From The Reading Room
The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.
A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

Modern Georgian has no capital letters. Almost everything today is written in Mkhedruli, a single case alphabet, which pushed aside the older ecclesiastical writing, Khutsuri, a system that did pair an uppercase (Asomtavruli) with a lowercase (Nuskhuri). In the 1950s Akaki Shanidze tried to bring Asomtavruli back as capitals over Mkhedruli. It did not catch on.
The script itself is old. Georgian has been written since 430 CE, starting with the inscriptional Asomtavruli, and about 4.5 million people use it now, for Georgian and other Kartvelian languages. Khutsuri survives in church use.
In this Noto serif the Georgian letters were drawn by Akaki Razmadze, with the Monotype team on the rest, and the stroke is modulated in the serif manner. Georgian Mtavruli letters are included as well.
