Owen Earl set out to make a Bodoni that did not cut corners, and he counted the result in files: 64 of them, once every weight, italic and optical size was drawn. Bodoni Moda came out of his foundry, indestructible type, and Google added it in November 2020.
A Bodoni lives on contrast, hairlines next to heavy strokes, and in this one the capitals also stand tall above a modest lowercase, which is what a cover line in capitals wants. The italics are noticeably narrower than the romans, so a long subtitle in italic gets some of its line back.
This page carries 12 of the 64, Regular to Black with an italic each. Earl’s extended set travels with them. Small caps, with a caps to small caps switch for acronyms, 4 kinds of figures (old style, lining, tabular, proportional), discretionary ligatures and 3 stylistic sets; enough to set a whole magazine spread from 1 family.
Mind the small sizes. A Bodoni’s hairlines go thin quickly, and with that short lowercase we would not set anything longer than a caption below 20 px. Above 60 px it is in its element.
