Notes From The Reading Room
The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.
A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

Curly legs on the K and the R caught Janusz Tryzno’s eye. He ran the Book Art Museum of Łódź, housed in a 19th century villa, and in piles of matrices and metal plates from the Polish National Type Foundry, wrapped in brown paper, he turned up a set with those odd letters and a handwritten note that read Brygada. It was a typeface from before World War II that nobody remembered.
He asked 2 museum volunteers, Przemysław Hoffer and Borys Kosmynka, whether it could be brought back. They worked from the matrices and from the foundry’s catalog entry for the type, dated 1954, and a microscopic camera helped them read the metal.
The revival was timed for 2018 and the 100th anniversary of Polish independence, with support from the Independent program and the President of the Republic of Poland. Mateusz Machalski and Ania Wieluńska share the credit with Hoffer and Kosmynka, alongside Capitalics.
What came out is a full serif text family. 4 weights from Regular to Bold each have an italic, and there are small caps, old style and lining figures in tabular and proportional widths, and 1 stylistic set. Greek, Cyrillic and Vietnamese carry it well past Polish, though a history of the interwar years set in Brygada is the use we keep picturing.
