Nunito

Vernon Adams drew Nunito as a display face with rounded terminals, every stroke end finished in a curve. It did not stay a display face for long. Jacques Le Bailly took it on and built out the full run of weights, with Cyreal also credited, and along the way Le Bailly made Nunito Sans, a twin without the rounded ends. Google has carried it since August 2012.

The family now stands at 16 styles, 8 weights from Extra Light 200 to Black 900, each with its italic, and every one carries 938 characters with Cyrillic and Vietnamese included.

Something we liked when we set it: the italics take almost exactly as much room as the uprights, only a handful of capitals differ. Italicize a word in a table cell or on a button and the text to its right barely moves.

The feature list runs deeper than most interface sans families do. Old style figures let numbers sit at lowercase height inside a sentence, there are 2 stylistic sets plus stylistic alternates, and case sensitive forms look after lines set in capitals.

Would we set a long article in it? We have seen worse ideas. The round ends make a paragraph feel friendly, maybe too friendly for a legal page, though on an app’s onboarding screens or a children’s reading site that tone is what you want. Keep Extra Light for 24 px and above, since it goes faint on a phone.
