The masks of Dogon dancers in Mali gave Chisaokwu Joboson the shapes of his apertures and told him where to place the counters inside many letters. Ojuju borrows from African masquerade more widely, from the costumes of traditional dance, and fills out the rest of its range with the lettering of African movie posters from the 1970s.
He calls the style Afro-grotesque. It is a reverse contrast design, so the heavy strokes are where you would usually expect thin ones, and as the weight climbs from Extra Light to Bold the apertures change shape. A headline in Light and the same headline in Extra Bold read almost as 2 related fonts.
7 weights in this download. The character set covers the Latin needed for sub-Saharan African languages, so a poster in a language from across that region will not run out of letters.
Mirko Velimirović is credited alongside Joboson at Ụdị Foundry.
