Oxygen was made for the KDE Project, the libre desktop for GNU+Linux, and that decided how it was drawn. Vernon Adams fitted the outlines closely to the grid of FreeType, the rasterizer Linux uses, so the letters would stay consistent across the different screen rendering settings people run, unlike screen fonts tuned for the Windows GDI renderer. He also ran the fonts through Werner Lemberg’s ttfautohint for the same reason.

What Google Fonts carries is the web version, cut down to Latin and extended Latin from the fuller desktop font kept in KDE’s own repository. The Regular went out in March 2012, Light and Bold followed in April.

Adams, who had taken an MA in Typeface Design at the University of Reading in 2006, also drew Oswald and Mulish, and later a monospaced partner, Oxygen Mono, which he named among his favorite projects.

For a web app or a settings screen, the Regular is a sensible default. There is no italic, so emphasis has to come from the Bold.
