Every letter in Play starts from the O, and that O is square and round at the same time. Jonas Hecksher drew the face during his years as Type Director at the Playtype foundry, and the 1 shape sets the tone for the whole alphabet. Large open counters and a generous x-height give it a look that is corporate without turning stiff.

Cyreal later expanded the Cyrillic, and the family now takes in Greek and Vietnamese as well, 827 characters in all. There are only 2 weights, Regular and Bold, with a rich OpenType set behind them, small caps and old style figures and tabular figures and stylistic alternates.

We’d use it for an app interface or a game menu, where the squared-off rounds feel at home.
