Thursday afternoon
Dear Alex,
I left the book by the window. There is a note on page twenty-three that I thought you would like. Bring it along on Thursday; we can finish the conversation over coffee.
See you there.

In 1990 Australia tried to get every school writing the same way. The Australian Education Council recommended a model based on the Simple Modern Hand of Tom Gourdie, a Scottish calligrapher, so that a student who changed states would not land in a classroom with a different alphabet on the wall. It half worked. Each state still teaches its own version, called script locally, and the 5 main models have since moved apart in the details.
Playwrite AU NSW is the New South Wales one.
It is a fast hand, slanted, with print capitals and plain loopless ascenders and descenders, and only partly joined, since a letter with a descender does not connect to the next. The open G without a crossbar and the unusual Y are shared with South Australia’s model. What sets NSW apart is in the lowercase: b and p with closed bowls, a disconnected f with a straight tail, r and z in their italic forms.
TypeTogether made it, with Veronika Burian and José Scaglione as designers, in 4 weights from Thin to Regular. In Word, switch on contextual alternates under Font, Advanced, or the joins will be missing. We would use it big, for newsletter headings and classroom labels, with a plain sans doing the reading text.
