Thursday afternoon
Dear Alex,
I left the book by the window. There is a note on page twenty-three that I thought you would like. Bring it along on Thursday; we can finish the conversation over coffee.
See you there.

The Australian Education Council wanted, in 1990, a hand based on Tom Gourdie’s Simple Modern Hand taught in every school in the country, the idea being that a child who moved from 1 state to another would not have to learn to write all over again. It held only in part. The states each drifted toward their own version, which Australians call “script”, and today there are 5 main models that share a source and differ in the details.
New South Wales has its own, and Veronika Burian and José Scaglione of TypeTogether drew it as Playwrite AU NSW. This Guides companion is the same letters with the writing lines printed behind them: baseline, x-height, ascender and descender, so a child sees where each stroke is supposed to start and stop.
Spaces carry no lines. The underscore does, and it is exactly as wide as a word space, which means a teacher can type a model word and follow it with a row of underscores to get an empty ruled line for practice.
There is 1 Regular weight. Turn on contextual alternates in Word or the letters will not join.
